General Education Courses
Both
the Associate of Arts and Associate of Science degrees at Nothwest
require students to complete 6 credits of English. The English
department offers a number of options for fulfilling this requirement,
although all students must take ENGL1010 Introduction to Composition
as the initial course in the required sequence. The second English
course may be chosen from four offerings: ENGL1020, ENGL 2010,
ENGL 2017, or ENGL2030
English
Courses
- ENGL
1010 English I: Introduction to Composition
Emphasizes the writing of personal, informative, persuasive,
and argumentative prose. Includes critical reading and class discussion.
This is the introductory writing course that is required most
consistently by colleges and universities throughout the United
States.
- ENGL
1020 English II: Introduction to Literature
Designed as a reading and writing course devoted to the study
of the content and technique involved in poems, short stories,
plays, and occasionally novels. Your instructor will emphasize
critical thinking and analytical skills applied to interesting
readings and developed in challenging essay assignments.
- ENGL
2010 Technical Writing
Designed to familiarize students with job_related writing,
emphasizing the roles audience and environment play in successful
communication. Includes correspondence, document design, and report
writing.
- ENGL
2017 Introduction to Research
Designed to provide students with a variety of research skills
and methods. Includes primary and secondary research. Introduces
various documentation styles, including APA and MLA.
- ENGL
2030 Critical Reading and Writing
Focuses upon the twin skills of analytical reading and interpretive
writing. The connection between reading and writing is the ability
to use critical thinking, and a study of critical thinking within
the course provides the foundation for the other two skills.
- ENGL
1210 English As a Second Language
The course is designed for non-native speakers of English
from other countries and emphasizes language usage appropriate
to study and life in a college environment in the United States.
Students will develop their speaking, listening, reading, and
writing skills with the instructor paying attention to their individual
learning styles.
