AUDITION MATERIALS

Randy Gifford, Choir Audition Chair
rgifford@ccsd1.k12.wy.us

All scales are to be sung a cappella.
The pitch should be given only once before each exercise.

Vocal Audition recordings must include the following:

Two Scales Major Scale, Blues Scale (unaccompanied) in swing style ascending and descending one octave, eighth notes sung on syllables doo-bah. Tempo qt.=106

Two Music Excerpts (accompanied or a cappella)

Billie’s Bounce
by Charlie Parker & But Not For Me by George & Ira Gershwin.

Use the scat syllables included in Billie’s Bounce or create your own scat syllables. Many jazz artists have recorded both of these selections. It is suggested that the student/teacher find a couple of recordings of each piece, listening to the artists’ renditions and sense of jazz style on both tunes. Either or both musical excerpts may be transposed to a comfortable key. You may sing either with live accompaniment (which does not contain the melody at any time) or a cappella. You may use Jamey Aebersold accompaniment CD’s (Vol. 3: The Blues and Vol. 107: Standards for Singers) as the accompaniment for the vocal or similar accompaniment. Aebersold materials are available at www.jazzbooks.com.

Students should have the music memorized before the first rehearsal.
Vocal Jazz Rhythm section: apply using the Jazz Band audition materials listed below.
