ASSOCIATE OF SCIENCE—PHYSICAL EDUCATION
With an emphasis on Secondary Education and Coaching

The Physical Education curriculum at Northwest College has the potential to improve the quality of life for every individual. This important component of any holistic education system provides a pathway to the needed skills, attitudes, knowledge and behaviors for healthful living. The three principle categories of course offerings are Professional Physical Education instruction, Physical Education Activity instruction and physical educatation instruction in Athletics.

Program specific outcomes: The Department of Health and Physical Education has four learning outcomes which are directly related to class experience. The expectation is that one or more of the outcomes are addressed in each of our courses. The learning outcomes are as follows:

  1. Design and use a healthy lifestyle management plan.
  2. Apply knowledge of growth, development, learning theory, and movement principles to program development and lesson planning.
  3. Administer various assessments including Fitness, Strength, Motor and Academia.
  4. Demonstrate knowledge of basic instructional strategies for athletic coaching.

The Associate of Science degree in physical education provides a solid foundation for students planning careers in Physical Education, Health Education, Teacher Education, and/or Coaching.  This specialization also prepares students for transfer to institutions offering bachelor's degrees in Physical Education.

The required core of study includes courses such as Introduction to Physical Education, History and Philosophy of Sport, Movement Core II and III, Personal and Community Health, First Aid and CPR.  The capstone course in Physical Education includes a practicum in the field of study whether it be coaching, after school programs, recreational sport programs or movement and dance academies. The Recreation Equipment Co-op provides an in-house outfitting service that enables our students to take full advantage of their Physical Education classes.

Students must also select from among core electives for the skill development component of their study.  For instance, a student in the Physical Education field of study to become a teacher may choose classes such as Physical Education for Elementary School or Introduction to Adventure Education as electives.

Athletics   Northwest College athletes earn credit for their participation in the various sports offered on campus. Men participate in Basketball and Wrestling while women are able to participate in Basketball and Volleyball. Also visit our College Athletics page for more information.
