Welcome to Northwest College's Life and Health Science Division Health, Outdoor and Physical Education Department.
Our mission is to emphasize the art and science of human movement while contributing to the physical, mental and social goals of students. Specialized course offerings in health, outdoor and physical education prepare students for transfer to four-year degree programs. All courses required to meet the Wyoming Professional Teaching Standards Board (PTSB) Endorsement for Head or Assistant Coach are offered. The department provides instruction in a variety of wellness, outdoor and activity courses to meet the Wellness General Education requirement for graduation from Northwest College.

MAJORS  Students majoring in Health, Outdoor, and Physical Education may earn the Associate of Sciences degree with a specialization in either Physical Education , Outdoor Education, or Athletic Training.

CURRICULUM The Health, Outdoor, and Physical Education program provides learning environments where students can prepare for professional careers and develop a sound understanding of wellness concepts. The curriculum provides basic instruction in the areas of health education, professional physical education, professional outdoor education, activity instruction for leisure skill development, and athletic participation.

Program specific outcomes: The Department of Health and Physical Education has four learning outcomes which are directly related to class experience. The expectation is that one or more of the outcomes are addressed in each of our courses. The learning outcomes are as follows:

  1. Design and use a healthy lifestyle management plan.
  2. Apply knowledge of growth, development, learning theory, and movement principles to program development and lesson planning.
  3. Administer various assessments including Fitness, Strength, Motor and Academia.
  4. Demonstrate knowledge of basic instructional strategies for athletic coaching.

SPECIAL EVENTS  On an annual basis, Northwest College hosts at least one conference tournament for one of the four intercollegiate sports participated in by our students.  There are a variety of ways to be involved in these special events, from athletic participation to support services. Many students are involved in line judging, video taping, athletic training, concession sales and other functions (contact instructors in HOPE division for more information).
