is
a student magazine showcasing the visual arts at Northwest College. The
magazine is completely produced by students. A typical staff includes students
from various disciplines: fine art, photography, graphic design, graphic
arts pre-press, print production, and journalism.
Visualize This is a cousin of a previously
published student magazine, Visual EyesVerbalize, a literary/art
magazine produced for seven years at the College.
Each
year, submissions to Visualize This are in the form of paintings,
sculpture, digital images, photographic prints and transparencies. A panel
of judges selects the final works for publication. Following judging,
graphic design students submit layout concepts. After revisions and votes
by the staff, a final design evolves. Photography students photographed
most of the original artwork using 4x5, 35 mm, Polaroid, and digital cameras in the Dietrich
photo studio. Pre-press students use a variety of scanners including Nikon
Coolscan III and Imacon Flextight
Precision II to convert transmissive and reflective art. All images are
scanned at 350 samples per inch and output as 175-line halftones. Another
group of pre-press students size, convert, color correct, and make dot
gain allowances in all images. Photoshop, along with QuarkXPress or InDesign
are used extensively by the design students in the layout and production
of the magazine.
Master
signature impositions are developed and paginated in the proper position
for film output to a Scitex Dolev 400 Imagesetter. Films were stripped
and exposed to plates.
Visualize This is printed on a single color
Heidlberg SORD press. Interior pages are printed on 23'x35' 100# Lustro
Gloss, and the cover is printed on 19'x25' Lustro Gloss 80# cover.
Magazine copies are available from the Northwest College
Bookstore for $5.00 each. Call 800-560-4NWC (ask for Bookstore) or 307-754-6308.
